A showcase event to connect local employers with case workers and human services agencies was a success on October 13, 2016. It featured a 1-hour training to help case workers, who might each work with as many as 100 clients, teach those clients to prepare for interviews and become stronger candidates for local jobs.
Human Services Federation and Prosper Lincoln’s employment skills developer, Bryan Seck, joined forces to bring about this workshop, which was hosted by the Center for People in Need. Lincoln Industries’ Human Resources director, Kristi Oltman, kicked off the agenda by sharing insight on “how to think like an employer.
After a question and answer session with Oltman, representatives from 17 local businesses each had 90 seconds to describe their business, the kinds of job openings they have and the skills required, and any particular qualities and skills they look for in their new hires. More than 65 case workers and human services agency reps then visited with the business representatives one-on-one in an “Employer Fair” setting. They also ranked the top 5 businesses they would like to tour and those group visits will begin in December.
One of the case workers commented “Great first training – looking forward to attending more. Love the idea of tours to get to know more about the company and build relationships!” Another shared “This is a wonderful idea to connect with employers in one spot. I also enjoyed the business summaries handout.”
This event is just the beginning of how Prosper Lincoln is working to Lift Lincoln Skills by shedding light on all the resources available to job-seekers and all the connections to be made to help move people from jobs to careers. If your business wants to get involved, or if you are a case worker who missed this opportunity, contact Bryan Seck or Mike Milbourn.
